Experienced trader joining contest is ok in my opinion but newbies joining contest to gain experience is not what I like. Because first they have to focus on making positive pips and then focus on other things.

When it comes to trading I am totally against trading with robots. They can be good for support systems but trading instead of humans. There may be few good performing robots but we don't know for sure. Better stay with what we have learned.

Yeah. To copy a trader it is not a bad idea to use a demo account to test the trader's performance. Since I am trader sided so don't understand much about investor sided mind. In any case we should be able to get some lessons from this.
