CRA report

A little backstory that happened to a friend of mine:

Let's say his name is Alex. Alex is a responsible person who has always been conscientious with their finances. Recently, he applied for a loan to purchase a new car. To his shock, the loan application was rejected due to a mistakenly reported as deceased on credit report.

Puzzled by this unexpected outcome, Alex decided to investigate further. He obtained a copy of credit report from one of the major credit bureaus (TransUnion). To his horror, the credit report showed that he is deceased. According to the report, Alex had supposedly passed away several months ago.

Alex was puzzled and upset by this false information. He is, of course, not deceased and quite alive. Fearing the possible consequences of declaring him deceased, including financial chaos and identity issues, Alex immediately contacted the credit bureau to correct the error.

Weeks later, there was no response and the credit bureau never corrected the reporting error. Question: How can Alex prove by other means that he is alive and how can he remove this deceased identity marking from his credit report?

He needs to contact a professional attorney who handles these types of cases. It is not uncommon for the CRAs to make a mistake in a report, but if they do not respond to your reports, only a court case and a good professional will help. Good luck to your friend!

Being mistakenly marked as deceased on a credit report can indeed lead to a host of issues. Here's some guidance on what Alex might consider doing to resolve this problem:

To prove that he is indeed alive, Alex should collect documents that can substantiate his identity and existence. These could include a valid passport, driver's license, birth certificate, or any official government-issued ID. It's crucial to have multiple forms of ID for a more robust case.

Providing evidence of ongoing financial activities, such as recent bank statements, utility bills, or tax records, can further demonstrate that Alex is very much alive and actively managing his affairs.

If necessary, Alex can also consider obtaining medical records from his healthcare providers as proof of his well-being and medical history.

Since he's already attempted to contact the credit bureau, Alex should continue trying to reach them. He may want to send a certified letter with copies of his documentation to ensure the credit bureau receives his dispute. It's essential to be persistent in requesting that the deceased status be removed.

It's crucial for Alex to document each step he takes in addressing this problem, including dates, correspondence, and any interactions. This documentation can be valuable should he require legal assistance in the future.

I hope this helps, and please extend my best wishes to Alex as he navigates through this challenging situation.

I have some questions:

Which specific documents would carry the most weight in persuading the credit bureau to correct the "deceased" status on his credit report, and are there any particular guidelines for ensuring the validity and acceptability of these documents? Additionally, could you elaborate on the importance of securing multiple forms of identification and how this strengthens the case?

The most influential documents are a certified death certificate, multiple IDs, and a notarized affidavit. Follow the credit bureau's guidelines for accuracy. Securing various forms of ID strengthens your case by enhancing identity verification and making it harder to dispute the claim.
