  10. ★★★ May 28 - June 1: main events of the week ★★★ Monday, May 28, 2012 - 09:45 Monday, May 28 – Tuesday, May 29 Japan: According to analysts, Japan’s household spending in April may increase by 2.5% vs. a 3.4% growth in March. April retail sales are expected to grow by 6.2% after a 10.3% growth in March. US: CB consumer confidence in May is forecasted to reach 69.6, indicating a general optimism. In April consumer confidence fell to 69.2 while was expected to reach 69.9. The small decrease was caused by a moderation in consumers’ short-term outlook despite improvement in current conditions assessments. Euro zone: Italy holds a T-bill auction. Wednesday, May 30 Australia: Seasonally adjusted retail sales growth may slow down to 0.2% in April after a 0.9% increase in March, indicating decreased consumer spending. Construction work done in Q1 is forecasted to grow by 3.1% after a 4.6% decline in Q4 (lowest since 2001). Switzerland: KOF Economic Barometer index is forecasted to increase to 0.44 in May, indicating that the Swiss Economy is headed towards an expansion in 2012. Euro zone: Italy holds a 10-year bond auction; the previous bond auction, which was held a couple of weeks ago, went well, but the rate reached 5.66%. Later in the day ECB President Mario Draghi will be speaking in Brussels with the potential for a hint toward the ECB's actions in front of the following week's rate decision. US: Pending home sales in April are expected to remain unchanged after a 4.1% surge in March. U.S. holds a T-bill auction. Thursday, May 31 New Zealand: NBNZ business confidence for May index is released (in April index reached 35.8). Most analysts expect the economic conditions to improve in May due to a surge in retail and services sectors. However, strong national currency keeps bugging exporters. Australia: Building approvals in April to increase by 0.7% after a 7.4% growth in March. Private capital expenditure in Q1 may surge by 4.1% after a 0.3% contraction in Q4, indicating an improved economic health. US: A bunch of important US data will be released. ADP estimate of US non-farm payrolls in May is expected to reach 139K after 119K in April. Preliminary GDP release is expected to show a 1.9% growth in Q1 compared with a 2.2% growth in Q4, indicating that the US economy is not strong enough to drive global growth on its own. Chicago PMI in May is forecasted to increase to 56.8 vs. 56.2 in April. A small decline in unemployment claims during the last week is expected (369K vs. 370K). Euro zone: German retail sales in April are expected to increase by 0.2% after a 1.6% surge in March; number of unemployed people in April may decline by 7K. French consumer spending in April may grow by 0.3% after a sharp decline in March. Euro Area Flash Estimate of Annual Inflation in May is expected to decline slightly to 2.5%. If the inflation rate estimate will change direction and increase, it may lower the chances of the ECB interest rate to remain low. Ireland holds a referendum on EU fiscal compact. The vote is crucial as it determines a crossroad for Ireland: the ‘Yes’ vote to the treaty could bring economic progress and financial stability together with unavoidable austerity measures. The ‘No’ vote will enhance downward pressure on the common currency. Friday, June 1 China: Manufacturing PMI is forecasted to drop to 52.1 in May from 53.3 in April (reading above 50 indicates industry expansion). Switzerland: Retail sales growth may slow down to 3.6% compared with a 4.2% growth in April. Great Britain: According to forecasts, manufacturing PMI will decrease to 49.7 in May from 50.5 in April, indicating industry contraction and augmenting concerns on the U.K. economic conditions. Great Britain holds a 10-year bond auction. Canada: GDP in March is expected to grow by 0.3% after the Canadian economy unexpectedly contracted by 0.2% in February. US: Analysts expect the U.S. non-farm payrolls to increase by 152K. However, in April the labor market didn’t fulfill expectations rising only by 115K, far below the 172K consensus forecast. The March unemployment rate is predicted to remain unchanged at 8.1%. The unemployment declined to 8.1% in April from 8.2% in March, despite lower NFP job gains. The ISM manufacturing PMI in May is expected to drop slightly to 54.1 compared with 54.8 in April. However, the Markit index showed a slide to 53.9 in May. 16. ★★★ May 21-25: Events to watch ★★★ Monday, May 21, 2012 - 06:45 Monday, May 21: • Canada: bank holiday (Victoria Day). The day is practically empty of important economic events. As a result, traders get ready for tomorrow with the Bank of Japan in focus. Tuesday, May 22: • New Zealand: the release of inflation expectations data (Q1), a leading indicator of economic sentiment. • Great Britain: Consumer Price Index (CPI) in April is forecasted to grow by 3.1% (a decline in comparison with a 3.5% growth in March, but still much higher, than a 2% BoE target). It’s possible, however, that the rate falls to 3% (the lowest since February 2010) saving the BoE Governor Sir Mervyn King from issuing the inflation letter (the letter is only required if the inflation is below 1% or above 3% and is written to explain why inflation has overshot the target). Public sector net borrowing in April may decline to minus 5.4B vs. 15.9B in March. • U.S.: Annualized number of existing home sales – the main gauge of housing market conditions – may increase from 4.48M in March to 4.65M in April supporting the idea of the nation’s economic rebound. The labor market is America’s weakest spot and many investors go the US nowadays only because it’s better than Europe. • Europe: consumer confidence in the euro area will likely remain low. Don’t wait for any surprises here. Spain will sell 3- and 6-month bills. • The OECD (Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development) will release its global growth forecast. Wednesday, May 23: • Japan: Trade deficit is expected to decline slightly to from 0.62T in March to 0.60T in April. Positive trade balance report may support yen ahead of the BOJ announcement. The markets will be eyeing the Bank of Japan’s meeting. The benchmark rate is seen unchanged at 0.10% level, though the central bank may be forced to do more easing. If it doesn’t – well, yen will surely strengthen. For more details see our special article. • Europe: Leaders of the EU 27 member states will assemble in Brussels for a crisis meeting. New French President François Hollande will try to push the currency union from austerity to growth promotion and make Germany agree to the euro bonds – debt issued for the euro zone as a whole. • Great Britain: MPC meeting minutes. According to the forecasts, the MPC officials have voted unanimously to keep the monetary policy unchanged. Retail sales in April are forecasted to decline by 0.5% vs. a 1.8% growth in March – that would be a very bad sign indicating that the condition of the recessed UK economy aren’t improving at all. • Canada: Core retail sales in March may grow by 0.6% compared with a 0.5% increase in February. The nation’s economy for now seems stable enough. • U.S.: New home sales are also expected to increase to 336K in April vs. 328K in March. Thursday, May 24: • New Zealand: April trade balance is to be released (134M trade surplus in March), while the government will make its annual budget statement. • China: May HSBC flash manufacturing PMI will be released (in April the index reached 49.3, indicating the industry contraction). • Euro zone: According to forecasts, French flash manufacturing and services PMIs in May are likely to increase to 47.1 and 45.9 respectively (however, the reading below 50.0 still indicates industry contraction). German flash manufacturing PMI is forecasted to reach 47.2, while the services one – to decline to 51.9 from 52.2. Euro zone’s flash purchasing managers’ surveys are expected to show a 10th successive monthly decline in manufacturing output (46.1) and a fourth successive fall in services (47.2). German Ifo business climate in May is expected to go down to 109.5 from 109.9 in April, indicating that concerns of entrepreneurs have risen on the back of the extending crisis. Later in the day, ECB president Mario Draghi is to speak; his comments will be closely watched for any indication of the future possible direction of monetary policy. • Great Britain: Britain’s revised GDP in is expected to confirm that the economy shrank 0.2% in Q4 after having declined by 0.3% in Q4 2011. The release of a preliminary GDP showed that UK is in a technical recession – a second consecutive quarterly decline. If the final GDP remains unchanged, the downward pressure on the sterling will grow. New QE is becoming more and more likely; last week a dovish inflation report was issued. The BoE Governor Mervin King sounds rather pessimistic: according to him, the euro zone is tearing itself apart. • U.S.: Core durable goods orders in April may increase by 1.3% vs. a 0.8% fall in March. Number of weekly unemployment claims is forecasted to reach 374K after the previous reading 370K Friday, May 25: • Japan: Tokyo Core CPI is forecasted to decline by 0.5% in May, while national – to grow by 0.1%. • Euro zone: GfK German consumer climate, which is an important indicator of consumer spending, may increase to 5.8 in May from 5.6 in April. 22. ★★★ May 14-18: Events to watch ★★★ Monday, May 14, 2012 - 07:45 Beginning from Tuesday. To learn about Monday’s events, go here. Tuesday, May 15 Australia: Monetary Policy Meeting Minutes. After the positive jobs report released this week, the central’s bank rate cut in June is no longer that evident, although with disappointing Chinese data (remember: main trading partner) Australian authorities may feel the need for stimulus all the same. Euro zone: there’s a number of Q1 preliminary GDP releases: French (0.2% previous, 0.0% forecast), German (-0.2% previous, 0.1% forecast), Italian (-0.7% previous, -0.6% forecast). The region is expected to enter an official recession contracting by 0.2% in the first 3 months of the year (second quarter in a row), while Spain and Italy are already there. German figures are especially important: if the leading euro area’s economy disappoints, this will hit an already feeble sentiment sending US dollar and Japanese yen up versus their peers as safe havens. In addition, watch German May ZEW Economic Sentiment and follow the news about ECOFIN Meetings. Newly elected French President Francois Hollande meets German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin. According to German government, Hollande's visit is a "strong signal" regarding the determination of both countries to continue their strong relationship. Euro zone’s leaders are expected to discuss the development of the region's monetary and fiscal policy. As is known, they have contradictory views on austerity. US: data for April. Economists look forward to a decline in American retail sales (both core and headline), while the CPI growth may slow down from 0.3% to 0.1%, though the core reading is seen unchanged. We will also get info on the demand for US debt: TIC Long-Term Purchases are expected to increase from 19.4B in February to 10.1B in March. Wednesday, May 16 Great Britain: A lot of important news for pound will be released. Claimant count in April may rise by 4.9K compared with 3.6K rise in March. The Governor of the Bank of England Mervyn King in his speech is expected to signal that interest rates will not rise from their record low until late 2013 at the earliest, as the UK's growth disappoints. Inflation report may leave the door open to the possibility of more QE, either explicitly or by forecasting that inflation will probably fall below the 2% target within 2-3 years without a change in policy. According to analysts at Citi, such a forecast could prepare the ground for the MPC to resume QE (bond purchases) in coming months if activity data and the European monetary union crisis worsen, or if the inflation worries diminish. U.S.: The release of the important housing market data is scheduled on Wednesday. According to forecasts, annualized number of building permits in April may to grow by 0.73M after a 0.75M growth in March. Number of housing starts in April is expected to increase by 0.69M against 0.65M in March. Industrial production in April may grow by 0.6% after remaining unchanged in March. FOMC Meeting Minutes are not expected to give any hints on policy easing - during the last meeting in April Bernanke stated in his press conference that "all the options are on the table", but the chances seem to fade away. Euro zone: The speech of ECB President Draghi will be scrutinized by the investors, aiming to forecast the euro zone’s future. Germany holds a 10-year bond auction. Thursday, May 17 Euro zone: Banks in France, Germany and Switzerland will be closed because of the national holidays. Spain holds a 10-year bond auction. New Zealand: Producer price index in Q1 may remain unchanged after a 0.5% growth in Q4. Australia: Inflation expectations data will be published. Japan: Preliminary GDP growth in Q1 may reach 0.9% after a 0.2% contraction in Q4. US: The number of unemployment claims fixed last week may grow by 370K vs. the previous print 367K. Later on Thursday Philly Fed Manufacturing Index will be released: in May is forecasted to grow to 10.6. Philadelphia region manufacturers' index declined more than expected in April reaching 8.5 from 12.5 in March, demonstrating the biggest drop in six months. However, most analysts believe improved consumer spending will provide further growth to the manufacturing sector. Friday, May 18 Great Britain: 10-year bond auction will be held. Canada: Core CPI growth in April is expected to remain unchanged at 0.3%. CPI may grow by 0.3% after a 0.4% growth in March. All: US President Barack Obama will host a two-day G8 Meetings at Camp David. The Group of Eight (G8) is a forum, where the eight of the world's most industrialized nations meet to discuss key topics and provide solutions for global issues. The G8 includes Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States. http://www.fbs.com/analytics/2012-05-14/17606-may-14-18-events-watch Work with FBS , be friends with FBS and be successful!
